Research: At first I had the idea to have a picture of a cat with something about nature in the background.

5 Step Critique
1. Observe
2. Describe:
In the first image it is of two calico cat paws on a white blanket, the shadows are pronounced and the cat is very feathered, separating it from the background.
In the second image the two calico cat paws are no longer on a white blanket, but now on an opaque image of a waterfall.
3. Analyze:
Both of the images use the element of art, contrast, to accentuate the cat, causing it's dark paws to stand out amongst the white and opaque waterfall background. The contrast makes the cat seem like it is another part of the photo because the transition from dark to light is very quick.
In the second image with the waterfall the principle of design used was proportion. The proportion is between the waterfall and the cat paws because there is a complete waterfall beneath the cats paws, but because the image was cut out to fit in that position it doesn't look completely obscene.
4. Interpret
These pictures could symbolize going out of your boundaries and maybe doing something you normally wouldn't. I find this meaning because cats wouldn't usually go into water yet that was the background that was chosen because it was more out of the ordinary and shows how you don't have to stay in your comfort zone.
5. Judge
I really enjoy the first picture of the cat without the waterfall, I wish that I would have photoshopped the cat hairs that were on the blanket off, as to create a cleaner feeling. I am not as proud with the second one with the waterfall because it doesn't look real enough, I could've taken the time to cut out the shape of the waterfall more carefully. Overall I don't think that either is terrible, each could use a little bit more work, but both are proficient enough at catching someones eye and giving meaning.
